Cheap Eats: Teriyaki etc!

Owned and operated by ex-Microsoft employee Sam Sim and his head-chef wife, Christine, Teriyaki etc! is a cheery yellow, mostly take-out teriyaki joint with a difference. OK. A few differences.

· You can place your order online (www.iloveteriyaki.com/order)
· You always have a choice of white or brown rice
· Sugar-free teriyaki sauce is an easy-to-do option
· Korean-style dishes dot the menu

Two of the best items I sample are listed on a big chalkboard menu, not in the printed menu. “Made in Korea” ($7.25) features fresh housemade kim chee, spicy chicken, bulgogi (Korean-style barbecued beef) and too-crisp Japanese gyoza dumplings.

Japanese-style chicken curry ($6.25) is a perfect way to warm yourself during winter weather. It’s a totally satisfying soupy mix of yellow curry — you specify how spicy — with chunks of chicken, carrots and peas over brown or white rice.

Vegetarians and other tofu enthusiasts should be pleased by the hearty and tasty Tofusoba ($6.25) dish: soba noodles stir-fried with tofu and vegetables. Tofuyaki, tofu with teriyaki sauce, is also available.

The staff is eager to please and will help you put together a meal to suit your needs. For low-carb adherents, Teriyaki etc! will substitute more veggies for rice and sugar-free teriyaki sauce.
